The Wayne County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center will take in owner released animals on a case by case basis. Our first concern is our space. We must have space available for every stray dog in Wayne County that is brought to our shelter. This is our primary responsibility. If we have space available the next step is to evaluate the dogs temperament. Your dog must be friendly, healthy, and adoptable. It must also get along well with other dogs. Please keep in mind that the dog will be in a loud and stressful shelter environment until it is adopted. Sometimes the shelter environment does not bother a dog and other times and can be very detrimental.
We socialize our dogs every day. They all have indoor/outdoor kennels with blankets and toys and enjoy our 5 large play yards. Our dogs are examined by a veterinarian, and provided medical care prior to adoption.
We can also notify you if we are unable to keep the dog any reason and you may pick it back up. There is a nonrefundable fee associated with surrendering a dog to our shelter. Dogs that are currently licensed are $50, dogs without a current license are $82. Below is a list of requirements to be considered and a few things that we are unable to do. After reading the requirements please feel free to fill out the Owner Release Request Form at the bottom of this page and a staff member will be in contact with you when a space becomes available. If you have any further questions about releasing your dog please contact our shelter at 330-345-1018.

Thank you for submitting your Owner Surrender Request online.
We understand that surrendering your dog is often times a very difficult decision that was not taken lightly. We try our best to accomodate as many owner surrenders as possible but we do have a responsibility to take in all the stray dogs in Wayne County and we must have space available for them. Many shelters throughout the country, ours included, are operating at capacity and are trying their best to rehome as many dogs as possible. Please be patient with us as we work to place dogs in loving homes.
We will work through our Owner Surrender Request list on a first come first serve basis, however not all dogs will be accepted into the shelter. There are several factors to consider including the cage size that is available, the adoptability of the dog, and how the dog will do in the shelter environment. We encourage everyone to continue to search for a home, rescue, or shelter for their dog while they are on our waiting list.
You will hear from a Shelter staff member in the order that your request was received with the exception of our cage size requirement. For example if we have a small kennel available and a Great Dane is next on the list, we would skip over that request until a large kennel was available.
If you have any questions about our Owner Surrender policy or would like to know where you are on the list please give us a call at 330-345-1018.
